AFTER THE INCREDIBLE DELUGE, COULD MORE RAIN BE ON THE WAY?... TEMPERATURES ARE MORE SEASONAL NOW AND SHOULD STAY THAT WAY THIS WEEK... THE TROPICS AR
A week ago, folks were talking about how dry the ground was and the ongoing drought. Then, a conveyor belt of tropical moisture became stalled over the East Coast. The rain began on Monday and continued on and off through Thursday night. Unpresidented rainfall amounts have been reported throught the region, especially in Northeastern N.C. and Southeast Virginia. Jacksonville, N.C. had over 20 inches of rain! ORF received over 12 inches of rain. I had about 8 inches in my backyard. As far as severe weather is concerned, there were several tornado warnings in Hampton Roads, especially in Chesapeake, but no actual tornadoes were reported locally. The remanants of Tropical Storm Nicole exascerbated the situation. If you saw the satellite loop during the week, you could see the tropical feed of moisture coming all the way from the Carribean Sea. Flooding continues in N.C. as the rivers and creeks rise to levels not seen since Hurricane Floyd in 1999. What about the future. Well, today (Saturday) is going to be a nice autumn day. A low pressure system is expected to develop off the Southeast Coast today and move slowly northeast bringing rain to Hampton Roads on late on Sunday. The wet weather may linger for a day or two. Forecasters aren't predicting rainfall totals anywhere near what we've received last week, and that is the good news. So, enjoy your Saturday and I'll have an update on Sunday.
