TYPICAL SUMMERLIKE WEATHER ROUNDS OUT JULY FOR HAMPTON ROADS…THE TROPICS QUIET DOWN FOR NOW
Based on what I’ve read in the various discussions regarding the upcoming week, I think we are just going to see a typical summertime pattern here in SE VA with very warm conditions and rather high humidity levels. And with all the heat and humidity, it won’t take much of a trigger to produce afternoon and evening thunderstorms in some spots. Speaking of thunderstorms, 1.50 inches of rain fell in my backyard on Sunday (July 27th). The frontal system that brought those storms will dissipate off the NC coast later on Monday. A weak high pressure area will build in and another front will approach on Wednesday. We are at the time of year when fronts have a tough time making it through our part of the world. They get bogged down as they just don’t have the oomph that they do in the cooler months. Wednesday could turn out quite hot across the area according to forecasters before we start the feel the effects of the next cold frontal system. Then, that one slows to a crawl nearby which is a similar scenario to the previous fronts that have moved into our region. Pinpointing exactly when it will rain, how much it will rain, and where it will rain is impossible in situations like this. Just be on guard each day for threatening conditions. Remember, thunderstorms can pop up very quickly at this time of year. The tropical Atlantic is quiet for now. Dolly is dissipating over the southwestern states but it is still dropping heavy rain in some areas. Keep in mind that the tropics will probably come to life again in the next few weeks as we move into the month of August so do not let your guard down.
